How are the visible edges of your tiled terrace neatly finished? Discover it here!

15.05.2025

The beautiful weather is in full swing, and people are once again eager to spend more time outdoors. A terrace is the perfect place for this. It can be built the traditional way, but also using adjustable terrace pedestals or a combination of pedestals and the Structusol aluminium support system. These systems allow for quick installation and offer numerous benefits. Curious about how to neatly finish the open sides of your terrace with a tile edge or an aluminium trim profile? Discover the possibilities below.

A terrace on adjustable pedestals

Looking for an alternative way to build a terrace? Then tiles supported on adjustable terrace pedestals are a great idea. These pedestals, made of polypropylene, support your tiles without the need for glue, mortar, or cement. Since the height of each pedestal can be adjusted individually, the underlying surface doesn't have to be perfectly level. One of the main advantages of this system is the open joints between the tiles, which allow rainwater to drain easily into the ground. Discover all the benefits of building a terrace with adjustable pedestals here.

Before we dive into the finishing options, let's first take a look at the two possible installation methods:

Installation options:

1. Tiled terrace on adjustable pedestals

Tiles can be placed directly onto theadjustable pedestals. These pedestals can be installed on any type of surface — concrete slab, flat roof, compacted sand, crushed stone, gravel, or screed — and they are height-adjustable. The result is a beautiful, stable, and ventilated terrace with open joints that allow rainwater to drain efficiently.

Within this range, you’ll find three product lines of pedestals: Comfort, Premium, and Firesol.Learn more about our adjustable pedestals for tile terraces.

2. Terrace on adjustable pedestals with Structusol

In addition to the standard system, SOLIDOR also offers an aluminium support system called Structusol. This system is installed on top of the adjustable pedestals of your choice. It is most commonly used for tiles that are 60x60 cm or larger, or when a specific laying pattern is desired. Thanks to this stable structure, your terrace can be levelled to the perfect height, and the installation of large-format tiles becomes much faster and easier.

How can the visible edges of your terrace be finished?

After installing your terrace on adjustable pedestals, you’ll often have open sides or gaps at the back of the terrace. Want to neatly close off and finish these edges? You can do so using a tile border, metal clips for tiles, or aluminium edge profiles.
Discover the available finishing options below, based on the type of terrace.

1. Tile edging – Structusol

When a terrace is built using adjustable pedestals in combination with the Structusol aluminium support system, the visible edges can be neatly finished with our edge finishing accessories. The same outdoor tile used for the terrace surface can be used for the edge finish, creating a uniform and elegant look. For the Structusol system, we offer the Inox L profile and the Structusol Edge Finishing System.

Structusol Edge Finishing System
Are your open terrace edges aligned with the Structusol aluminium battens? Then the Structusol edge finishing system is the ideal solution. This system consists of a top metal piece (featuring the S-logo) that is placed on the Structusol top plate, and a bottom metal piece that is positioned beneath the pedestal. Together, they securely hold the vertical tile in place and deliver a clean, durable finish.

INOX L
Looking to finish the front-facing open sides (at the ends of the Structusol battens) of your terrace? The INOX L is the perfect solution. This stainless steel L-profile is mounted using Structusol fasteners (self-drilling stainless steel screws) in the pre-drilled holes of the aluminium structure.
This system not only provides a clean edge finish, but also allows you to create steps if needed.

2. Metal clips for tiles

When a terrace is supported solely by adjustable pedestals, the visible edges can still be neatly finished using the Edge Finishing Accessory. These metal clips are designed to hold a vertical tile in place along the open sides of the terrace.

To ensure optimal support for these edges, the clips are used in combination with a half pedestal, allowing for a secure and stable installation of the edge tile.

3. Sidesol aluminium finishing profiles

Prefer not to use the same tile for your terrace edging? Then you can opt to finish the visible edges of your terrace—installed on adjustable pedestals—with a high-quality aluminium finishing profile.

The Sidesol aluminium profile hides the pedestals from view and provides them with added protection. This ensures your terrace has a sleek, elegant finish. The durable aluminium edge profile comes in a thickness of 2.2 mm and is available in three different heights. You can also choose from three stylish colours: black, mid-grey, and corten steel.
